Nightshade is a family of plants that includes tomatoes, eggplant, potatoes, peppers, paprika, Ashwaganda, goji berries and tomatillos.Tobacco is also in the nightshade family. Nightshades are unique because they contain small amounts of Solanine(alkaloids). Alkaloids are chemicals that are mainly found in plants.Most nightshades were not thought of as being edibles(outside of parts of South America) until the 1800's.

Solanine toxicity syndrome

Solanine has pesticidal properties, and it is one of the plant's natural defenses.Solanine poisoning can occur when someone eats large amounts of solanine, a colorless alkaloid found in potatoes and other solanaceae plants like tomatoes and eggplants. Solanine is toxic even in small amounts and can cause gastrointestinal and neurological symptoms. Symptoms can be delayed for 8–10 hours and may include:

Solanines are not water soluble and are not destroyed by cooking and the body cannot break them down efficiently! Certain people will be more sensitive to them and some people will not be efficient excreters! The average body burden is thought to be 50mg. It is stored in most organs (especially the thyroid) as well as the soft tissues including the skeletal muscles.
